How we check the list

The Free List helps you compare selected NYC museums and galleries before choosing where to go.

Start with the official policy

Our curated guides link to museum admission and booking pages. Each venue carries the date its policy was checked. Ordinary evening hours have a separate source and review date. Rebuilding a calendar does not refresh either review date.

Four different things to check

  • Free admission has no charge under the stated offer.
  • Eligibility offers require the age, residence or other proof described.
  • Pay what you wish can still require a payment.
  • Ordinary opening hours do not tell you the price of admission.

Booking availability, holiday closures and special events can override a regular plan. Calculated dates are policy matches, not reserved tickets. Known dated closures are excluded from those matches; an unlisted closure may still exist.

Scope and freshness

The museum guides are a selected, source-reviewed collection. The wider homepage database and exhibition listings are maintained separately and can have older evidence. A source link and review date help you decide what to verify before traveling. We do not claim to list every free museum or to have visited every venue.

Corrections

If our summary differs from the institution’s current website, follow the institution’s instructions. Our maintenance process records the official source, checks eligibility and booking requirements, and updates the shared policy so related guides use the same information.
