The 22nd St space has a bookshop that's destination-worthy on its own -- rare art books and monographs. The gallery roster (Louise Bourgeois, Philip Guston, Mark Bradford) means every show is an event.

After: Empire Diner (restaurant, $$). 10th ave at 22nd, 3 blocks east. art deco landmark in a 1940s railcar, open since 1976. eggs and a burger under $20. the building alone is worth the detour.
